This contemporary piece is named Aaka, meaning mother. She personifies what a mother means to you, whether it’s another person or this earth. She’s a reminder that we should always adore, respect, and cherish our mothers. Motherhood is the foundation of life, it is sacred.

I created this mask using multiple mediums, all natural materials were hunted and bartered by our family here in Utqiagvik. I sculpted out the Iñupiaq woman with clay. She sits on pink salmon skin that is edged with mauve beads, and she has a beaded flower. Her hood is made of polar bear and beaver fur. The center is made with wire wrapped caribou antler and black/gold beaded chain. A clay sculpted ulu sits on polar bear fur at the end. Beaded flower chains also hold the remaining caribou antlers. The backing includes pink salmon skin and a silver wire hook for hanging. Our region has been making masks for thousands of years, and I’m so happy to share this piece with all of you.
